Hi all,
Time for an update. Hope this helps.
I returned to BIDC late last year to finally sort out my dental issues. As previously reported my initial dentist no longer worked at BIDC, I and was recommended to consult Dr Somkiat Aimplee. That proved to be an excellent choice, a top rate dental specialist. I ended up having very intensive dental work, over a three week period.
I was unsure whether to go down this route as I had not really envisaged spending that much money. After long discussions with Dr Somkiat, who outlined the choices I had and what procedures that would entail, I took his advice and thought about it over the weekend. There was no up-selling in this discussion whatsoever, it all revolved around different dental procedures. In the end I opted for the 'Full Monty'. Some very long days in the chair followed(8-9 hours), not painful but tiring. The end result was terrific, all the issues sorted and a set of teeth to rival George Clooney!
I had an ongoing issue with some work on a crown from a previous visit, which after a discussion with BIDC, was done under their warranty(they offer a one year warranty, this was over two years later), so that was reassuring.
For those who do not know BIDC, it is a large dental hospital over seven floors and numerous dental specialists. depending on what you want done, you will be assigned a staff specialist. Though prior to my last BIDC visit, I emailed them and requested to see Dr Somkiat. Once you are assessed you are given appointments with different dentists depending on your requirements.
My implant work was done by Dr Chatchai Kunavisarut, very experienced, he worked for years in the US. Both Chatchai & Somkiat lecture at the university, so the on patient time can be limited, I would highly recommend both.
Since returning to Sydney I have had a check up with my local dentist, and he was quite impressed by the work done.I have one thing left to do. My final implant was inserted on my last trip and as your need about three months between the implant & fitting of the crown, this still needs to be done. Before I left to go to Bangkok I confirmed with my dentist here that he would be happy to fit the crown when the time came. As it turned out that both Bangkok & my dentist here uses the same Swiss Implant product so this is not a problem.

It has taken me a few years to get to this point(& a lot of research) I have to say that I am very pleased with the result. Without doubt BIDC employ highly trained & skilled dentists, which was one of my earlier concerns when i first started researching this option. I have had far more work than most people will require. For similar work I was estimated not much short of $90,000AU here in Sydney, I have paid a bit under 1/3 of that(still a large amount when you think about it)
Of course you have to factor in flight costs, accommodation, time off work etc to work out if it is viable for you.
One final tip. BIDC is a seven minute walk(2 minute taxi/taxi bike, 45 THB) from the underground stop(Thailand Cultural Centre ) I would suggest you find a hotel in or near Sukhumvit(I stayed in Park Plaza SO18, nice place, small with a good roof pool) The Thailand Cultural station is only three stops from Sukhumvit,- 30 minutes from my hotel to BIDC). Any of the hotels near the river will entail a considerably longer commute to BIDC.
Hope this helps.
Andy
